Échanges de sels nutritifs entre la zone côtière et un système estuarien intertidal : la baie de Somme (Manche, France) ArchiMer
Loquet, N; Rybarczyk, H; Elkaim, B.
The Bay of Somme is the second ranked estuarine system, after the Seine estuary, on the French coasts of the Eastern Channel. The nutrient retention and regeneration capacities of this estuary have been calculated from continental and coastal hydrological data and from estimation of the residence time. Measurements at the mouths of the main rivers over a one-year period (from October 1994 to November 1995) were used to construct a budget of continental inputs which showed that the smaller rivers could, at times, be important contributors. The annual budget shows continental inputs of nitrogen, phosphorus, silicon and suspended particulate matter of 9 000 t . y(-1), 380 t . y(-1), 5 400 t y(-1) and 67 800 t . y(-1). Estimation of coastal inputs to the...

Influence of OSHV-1 oyster mortality episode on dissolved inorganic fluxes: An ex situ experiment at the individual scale ArchiMer
Richard, Marion; Bourreau, Juliette; Montagnani, Caroline; Ouisse, Vincent; Le Gall, Patrik; Fortune, Martine; Munaron, Dominique; Messiaen, Gregory; Callier, Myriam; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle.
Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1 μvar) infection has caused significant mortalities in juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas). In contrast to the practices of other animal production industries, sick and dead oysters are not separated from live ones and are left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences on fluxes of dissolved materials. A laboratory approach was used in this study to test the influence of oyster mortality episode on dissolved inorganic fluxes at the oyster interface, dissociating (i) the effect of viral infection on metabolism of juvenile oysters and (ii) the effect of flesh decomposition on oxygen consumption and nutrient releases at the individual scale. Nine batches of juvenile oysters (Individual Total wet weight...

Mesoscale modulation of air-sea CO2 flux in Drake Passage ArchiMer
Song, Hajoon; Marshall, John; Munro, David R.; Dutkiewicz, Stephanie; Sweeney, Colm; Mcgillicuddy, D. J., Jr.; Hausmann, Ute.
We investigate the role of mesoscale eddies in modulating air-sea CO2 flux and associated biogeochemical fields in Drake Passage using in situ observations and an eddy-resolving numerical model. Both observations and model show a negative correlation between temperature and partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)) anomalies at the sea surface in austral summer, indicating that warm/cold anticyclonic/cyclonic eddies take up more/less CO2. In austral winter, in contrast, relationships are reversed: warm/cold anticyclonic/cyclonic eddies are characterized by a positive/negative pCO(2) anomaly and more/less CO2 outgassing. It is argued that DIC-driven effects on pCO(2) are greater than temperature effects in austral summer, leading to a negative correlation. In...

Nutrient Fluxes Associated With Submarine Groundwater Discharge From Karstic Coastal Aquifers (Côte Bleue, French Mediterranean Coastline) ArchiMer

Determination of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) from karstic coastal aquifers is important to constrain hydrological and biogeochemical cycles. However, SGD quantification using commonly employed geochemical methods can be difficult to constrain under the presence of large riverine inputs, and is further complicated by the determination of the karstic groundwater endmember. Here, we investigated a coastal region where groundwater discharges from a karstic aquifer system using airborne thermal infrared mapping and geochemical sampling conducted along offshore transects. We report radium data (223Ra, 224Ra, 228Ra) that we used to derive fluxes (water, nutrients) associated with terrestrial groundwater discharge and/or seawater circulation through the...

Nutrient fluxes on an intertidal mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay, and influence of the emersion period ArchiMer
Feuillet-girard, Michelle; Gouleau, Dominique; Blanchard, Gérard; Joassard, Lucette.
Fluxes of nutrients (NH sub(4) super(+), NO sub(3) super(-), PO sub(4) super(3-) and Si(OH) sub(4)) were studied on an intertidal mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay, France, at two different seasons and at different times of the emersion period. Fluxes through the sediment-water interface were both calculated from vertical profiles of nutrient concentration in pore-water (diffusive fluxes, JD) and measured in light and dark benthic mini-chambers (measured fluxes, J sub(0)). Results indicate that ammonia was mainly released in summer while nitrate was mainly taken up in late winter. This uptake from the overlying water was probably due to the coupling of nitrification-denitrification within the sediment. The J sub(0) /J sub(D) ratio further indicates that...

The measurements of nutrient fluxes at the water-sediment interface : incubation methods (in laboratory and in situ) ; gradient method (calculated fluxes) ; benthic ecosystem tunnel ArchiMer
Feuillet-girard, Michelle; Gouleau, Dominique; Zurburg, Wouter; Small, A. C.; Dankers, N.; Heral, Maurice.
Many flux measurements methods have been described in the literature. The purpose of our study was to compare results obtained by these different methods : gradient method, incubation method (Laboratory and in situ), benthic ecosystem tunnel. The field experiment has been performed in the Marennes Oleron Bay since May 1991 (Contrat C. E. E. FAR)
